Festives for Santa Eulàlia in Barcelona

Children in Barcelona have got the city´s winter entourages this weekend. On Friday, the Àliga (The Eagle) figure has signaled the start of the festival and processions which has filled Barcelona with mythical characters of Catalan culture. This festival is a big chance to see local popular culture in all its brightness, with traditional dance groups, fire runs, sardana dancing, giants´ show, falcons acrobatic human towers and a traditional human towers called Castellers.

Not to be overlooked are the Ciutat Vella giants, which have change for a few days all their name to Laia in honour of Santa Eulàlia. The guest artist at this year´s event is the photography director and theatre lighting specialist Josep Maria Civit, who has created a very special catwalk at Palau de la Virreina.

The other stars at the festivities for Santa Eulàlia has been teenagers. Using the slogan ´Sacsegem carrers i places!´ [Let´s rock streets and squares], the city´s youth associations has  been speaking up for the use of public spaces, with the organistions Lali Jove, Festa Major Juvenil and Associativa de Barcelona all involved. On Saturday 11, Moll de la Fusta has got filled with children´s activities and workshops for youngsters, while in the evening groups such as Oques Grasses, Tremenda Jauria and 9son will be taking to the stage.

During the weekend there have also been open days at different museums and cultural centres around the city. 

The last, but not the least, once again this year the festivities for Santa Eulàlia has been lead by the light show called Llum Barcelona (Light in Catalan). During the celebration, various places in the city has been lit up in spectacular fashion. The projections and shows has been created by renowned and prestigious light artists and also there has been creations designed by students at schools of art, design, illumination and architecture at iconic courtyards at the Ciutat Vella (Old City) district.
